NED University unable to pay annual increments

KARACHI: NED University of Engineering and Technology’s authorities said on Wednesday that the administration will not pay annual increment to their employees until the financial crisis persists in the university. It was decided in the university’s 23rd Senate meeting held here at the campus.

The meeting was presided over by Vice Chancellor, Mohammad Afzal Haq. It was attended by Senate members. The meeting discussed various issues regarding budget, employees’ departmental promotions, health insurance, and development during 2014-15.

The VC headed the meeting as the chairman of the Senate, as the Chancellor, who is Sindh Governor, and Pro Chancellor, who is Education Minster, could not attend the meeting.

It was also decided that Senate will constitute the Board of Selection Committee that will select the head of the department. The research work will be enhanced.

The meeting was initiated with recitation of few verses from Holy Quran. The members discussed each of resolution’ points, some of them were passed on consent of majority of members and in the favour of the university.

The members also discussed the report of Prof Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajpoot about the financial mismanagement of the university during previous administration which was issued by Chancellor House few months back. The members demanded of VC to take action against perpetrator who had brought the university at the brink of bankruptcy.

On the occasion, the VC said his administration team had brought positive reforms in the university as the bank loan interests had reached zero level. He thanked Sindh government and Higher Education Commission (HEC) for helping them in getting university out of financial crisis. He said Sindh government had issued funds worth Rs 781 million from 2012-13 to 2014-15 so far, while the HEC had released Rs264 million. He said they had contracted with private insurance company that will deal with the medical issues of employees which were dealt by the administration of NED university in the past.

One of members of Senate Mohammad Imran Aslam raised an issue of illegal promotions of teachers. To a question on the condition of NED University employees’ residential colony, the VC said they had no enough money to spend on the development as the university had already paid subsidy.

The meeting was also attended by Registrar Syed Ghazanfar Hussain, and NETA’s President Syed Usman Ali Shah.
