Need of Internet highlighted at KU workshopNovember 12, 2014
KARACHI: A workshop on “ Internet of Everything “ was organized by Department of Computer Science University of Karachi, here on Monday at UBIT Seminar Hall. The event started with the recitation from the verses of the Holy Quran which blossomed it. After that the In charge DCS Badar Sami was given a welcome note.
He talked about the scope of internet and also discussed the concept of IoE. Prof Dr SM Aqil Burney , meritorious Professor, founder of the department was invited for his address, who said: “When we started in 1994, there were only 70 students and two teachers and today there are over 1700 students and many teachers.”
According to him, the goal of the concept behind it is to have a peaceful and vibrant society. We need to interact with other people and the future depends in innovation. He ended by praising the hardworking students and the efforts taken by the workshop coordinator Dr M Sadiq Ali Khan. The main part which elaborated the tagline of the workshop IoE was conducted by M Noman Ali, Assistant Professor and Academy Coordinator in Cisco Support Centre CTTC.
He explained IoE as “every computing device must be connected to a network: 99% of the unconnected devices are expected to be on a network by 2020”. The second session was conducted by Ahmer Saeed Assistant Director IT in State Bank of Pakistan and Director of Cisco Centre in CTTC.
He discussed cyber security-modern security threats and their mitigation. He said every organization prioritizes the protection of its assets and databases. With this, the workshop headed towards its closing ceremony. Rehan Hashmi, Member National Assembly and sub-committee member HEC, was invited as a the chief guest.
The guest of honor was Jamal Ahmed, Member Provincial Assembly. It started with an address by the workshop co-coordinator Dr Sadiq Ali Khan. He said Rehan Hashmi is a politician, a true entrepreneur, energetic and very experienced management trainer. Dr Sadiq highlighted about the importance of the workshop for the students.
He further announced that through this workshop, the department of computer science is basically starting the Cisco Academy Karachi University activities. The internet now connects anywhere from 10 billion to 15 billion devices. It is a network of network where billions or even trillions of connections create unprecedented opportunities as well as new risks.
He said: “I personally believe that the coming year will sign three major shifts in education: IoE, shared services and cloud computing. For education, IoE means that the experiences that we deliver to students will be more connected, integrated, flexible and meaningful.
It is a positive and encouraging step taken by the Department of Computer Science by starting training and short courses program through Cisco Academy that may brings the revenue and resources for the department as well as that enhance the technical capabilities of the students that helps the students to explore the market trends and requirements.
Then the chief guests, while passing his reviews about the workshop said: “Make your passion your profession.” He also appreciated the efforts of Dr Sadiq for conducting the workshop and taking this initiative. He highlighted some facts and figures about the grant of HEC especially for the public sector universities in Karachi.
He talked about the private –public organization partnership for resource generation. He motivated students about the future perspective of the industry that industry needs such a bright talented students. He appreciated the infrastructure facility available at the department.
