Nishan-e-Haider Bridge Tournament held

KARACHI: One of the largest, toughest and exciting gathering at the Defence Service Club at DHA, made Nishan-e-Haider Bridge Tournament a major success. It was sponsored by Maj (retd) Saadat A. Khan, which has shown his love and attachment to the Pakistan Army and the country.

The pair tournament spoke highly for its technical and execution marvel by Shakeel Chandna, the Tournament Director, who took up the responsibility in absence of celebrated TD, M. Azwerul Haque, who was unwell, and highly controlled discipline by Ahsan Zahir Rizvi, the president of Karachi Bridge Associates.

Twenty-five bridge players contested the rich purse and the pride of the game. There had been a very competitive game throughout which kept the positions fluctuated by every round. However, the pairs of Rashidul Ghazi – Tehsin Gheewala, Anwer Kizilbash-Ahsan Zahir Rizvi, Gulzar Bilal- Mubashir Puri, Mazhar Ali Khan-Reza Naqvi remained in the main stream and it was certain the winner will emerge from this lot.

Competing from East-West direction, the star players Rashidul Ghazi- Tehsin Gheewala outscored others and came at the top of the ladder with a handsome score of 65.21 percent, followed closely by veterans Raza Naqvi and Mazhar Ali Khan better known as Mazhar Goren while “Aatish Jawan tha”. Reza and Mazhar scored 62.80% for the second position. Gulzar Bilal and Mubashir Puri, though do not play together as a pair, yet they performed excellent and finished on third position having a score of 58.22.

President of Defence Service Club presented the prizes to the winning pairs after the close of the championship. In his welcome speech, the sponsor, Saadat A. Khan, expressed his gratitude to all bridge players who came there to make it a great success, especially the notable ones and he assured that with the cooperation of KBA, the Defence Club may sponsor more such tournaments as this club has a very friendly environment and easy to approach.

On behalf of the Bridge players, Ahsan Zahir Rizvi paid tributes to sponsor and assured KBA’s fullest cooperation in arranging more such ventures in future.
