No leniency to helmet-less bikers, says DIG traffic

KARACHI: Karachi Traffic police on Monday started a campaigning to implement safety laws for motorcyclists in the metropolis that bounds all bike drivers and pillion riders to wear safety crash helmets while riding a two-wheeler. Wearing a crash helmet is also mandatory even if the pillion rider is a female.

From today (Monday) it is compulsory for all people riding or pillion riding motorcycles, including females, to wear safety helmets, DIG traffic Ameer Sheikh told PPI. The crash helmet is a safety measure is compulsory for those riding motorbikes irrespective of their gender.

The safety measure has also been extended to the female pillion riders to ensure their safety. Those who violate this regulation will have to pay a fine from Rs 150 to Rs300 along with other necessary legal action from June 9, 2015.

The ban on helmet-less riders was supposed to be implemented from June 1st, but it was extended till the June 8th.

Sheikh said that sixty percent of deaths from traffic accidents are of motorcyclists who due to their negligence failed to wear a safety helmet. Safety first, is the safety always, he stressed.
