Operation against profiteers to continue: Commissioner

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui on Tuesday said that the government would not tolerate fleecing of people at the hands of adulterators and profiteers. During a meeting with the delegation of Pakistan Consumers Federation (PCF), the commissioner assured that operation by assistant commissioners against adulterators and profiteers would continue till desired results were achieved.

Siddiqui said that officials were permanently deputed at the vegetable and fruit markets in the city, especially at the auction hours in the nights to check artificial shortage of these commodities and profiteering.

The delegation comprised PCF members, including chairman Consumer Association of Pakistan (CAP) Kaukab Iqbal, Chairman Consumers Eye Pakistan (TCEP) Umar Ghauri, Chairperson Consumer Forum Huma Bukhari, Chairman Consumer Foundation Sheikh Rashid Alam, and representatives of Helpline Trust and Pakistan Consumers Bureau along with Air commodore Inamullah Khan.

The PCF members asked commissioner to ban paper bags manufactured from cement bags that harm people’s health and lives. They said that these bags were used in packing flour that was hazardous for human health.

They also drew commissioner’s attention towards unethical marketing practices, hazardous technologies and production processes and pointed out the need for consumer legislation and its enforcement.

The commissioner assured the delegation of strict action against people who were playing with the lives of people.
