KARACHI: Oxford University Press (OUP) is launching its exciting new initiatives- Oxford Big Read and Oxford Quality School Programme. This was announced by Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director, Oxford University Press (OUP) Pakistan, at a press conference held at a local hotel.

While disclosing the details of the two projects, Ameena Saiyid explained that Oxford Big Read (OBR) is a first-of-its-kind reading contest in Pakistan aimed at primary and secondary students of schools in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.

The idea behind this project is to introduce school children to quality reading materials and to inculcate in them a life-long love of reading, leading to appreciation of the written word, and better learning and critical thinking skills. Students who participate in the competition will be required to read Oxford books and write reviews on them. The book reviews will first be judged on the regional level and the finalists will then compete at the national level, with the winners getting exciting prizes. The reviews will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of jury.

The Oxford Quality School (OQS) Programme works towards the shared pursuit of excellence in education. It works as a school support scheme, introduced internationally by Oxford University Press and is now being launched in Pakistan. Ameena Saiyid further elaborated that the programme will be conducted under an agreement between OUP and schools which fulfil the selection criteria. OQS provides participating institutions with a full educational solution, including a range of quality products, services, and teaching materials, and teacher training and development, all of which are aimed at maintaining and further enhancing the reputation of the schools, institutions joining the OQS programme will be awarded with an OQS certificate, endorsing their commitment to using quality teaching materials from OUP. The OQS will also be granted permission to use Oxford Quality School logo strip on promotional literature, websites, and signboards.
