Pak Special Olympians increase medal tally in Los AngelesJuly 29, 2015
Los Angeles: Pakistan’s Special Olympians lived up to the expectations and won as many as seven gold and three bronze medals here in the ongoing World Special Olympic Games.
In tennis, Pakistani pair of Ahsan Anwar and Mohammad Arif Qayyum clinched doubles event title beating Venezuelan duo of Soleman and Eskander in straight sets by 4-2, 4-0 score.
The Pakistani pair was placed in fourth division. As per rules, four types of ITF approved balls were used for different categories of ability. For Division 4, green ITF approved balls were used.
The final round of Table Tennis also commenced on Thursday, Pakistan’s special Olympian Mohammad Arham was too good for his opponents in the Division 1 competitions. First he thrashed Al Ketbi Awadh of UAE 3-1.
He went on to beat Diouf Moha Hamaou of Senegal with 3-0 score. Finally he brushed aside Stojanovski David of Macedonia with similar 3-0 score-line to clinch gold medal.
Meanwhile, Ruqia finished with bronze in the table tennis singles in division 2 encounters. Meanwhile, winning against Wong Ying of China with 3-0 score and losing to Chan Suetying of Hong Kong with 0-3 score and lost to Wong Ying with same score of 0-3.
It was great day for Jahanzaib Iqbal in badminton singles event. He won all his three matches in straight sets his opponents were from Germany and Isle of Man, eventually securing gold medal.
In athletics, Pakistanis were also not behind as Ramail Irshad bagged gold in 200 meter race final. Marvi Azhar earned bronze medal in 400 meters race in division 3.
Earlier on Wednesday, Asim Zar finished on top in the division 14 final 100 meter race in swimming but his result was withheld due to technical reason. In the end Jury of the event decided in his favour and awarded him gold.
Pakistani cyclists were too good for their opponents and in the time and trial event, Uzma Yousaf won gold in one kilometre race and Khadija Irfan finished with bronze in the same race. In another time and trial one kilo meter race, Sumbul Yousuf finished 7th.
Aqsa continued her impressive run and won prestigious gold in 50 meter back stroke in the division 2 event of swimming.
In basketball, Pakistan special (traditional) team lost to Israel by 19 -27 score and Pakistan’s unified team beat Luxemburg with 36-29 score.
