KARACHI: Pakistan has historic relation with Czech Republic, said Zakaria Usman President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry while welcoming the Miroslav Krenek Ambassador of Czech Republic who visited Federation House Karachi on Wednesday.

President FPCCI said that Pakistan and Czech Republic enjoy good relations, but trade remains low, at the level of around $50 million. Trade is concentrated in traditional items such as textiles and lather, but we should also explore other areas like marble, granite, sports goods and surgical instruments. In particular, there could be collaboration in gemstones and jewellery, because Czech Republic is a leader in high quality cutting and polishing.

Similarly, Pakistan has a large variety of fruits and vegetables that present opportunity for canning, processing and preservation. There was also potential for furthering the export of Halal food and rice. He also proposed joint ventures and technical collaboration from Czech Republic.

While responding to the President’s remarks, Krenek said that the Czech Republic is keen to look at collaboration in energy with Pakistan. He noted the suggestion to hold joint events and exhibition and appreciated the idea. He said that some of EU members having strong textile base were hesitant regarding GSP Plus status to Pakistan but Czech Republic was the strong supporter for Pakistan in EU. He said that Czech companies established their business in Pakistan like Bata, and Skoda car was also imported from Czech Republic.

The meeting was concluded with the presentation of FPCCI crest to Miroslav Krenek Ambassador of Czech Republic. The meeting was attended by Shaukat Ahmed Senior Vice President FPCCI, Khurram Sayeed, Sheikh Imtiaz Ahmed Vice Presidents FPCCI, Naveed Jan Baloch former Vice President FPCCI, M A Lodhi, Secretary General FPCCI and Shahid Ansari, Honorary Consul General of Czech Republic at Karachi.
