Pedestrian bridges to built in collaboration with corporate sector

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui and Administrator Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Rauf Akhtar Farooqui announced on Tuesday that pedestrian bridges would be built in collaboration with private companies in Karachi to facilitated citizens, particularly handicapped persons.

Pedestrian bridges would be built at different places of city to reduce road accidents and provide relief to citizens, they said in a meeting which was presided over by Commissioner Karachi at his office, held to review traffic and stations improvement in different roads.

At the meeting, headquarter COMCAR Pakistan Navy Commander Rizwan Ahmed, Director Local Government Commissioner Office Robina Asif, Secretary RTA & Deputy Commissioner Traffic Manshad Ali, Telenor Pakistan Headquarter South Public & Government Affairs Lt Colonel (r) Arif K Baig, Additional Deputy Commissioner East Syed Junaid Ahmed, Assistant Commissioner Sajjad Abro and DIG Traffic Police, Chief Executive Officer Clifton & Cantonment Board & DMCs East, Rauf Akhtar Farooqui and South representatives were also present.

The commissioner said that pedestrian bridges would also be facilitated with ramps for handicapped people to cross roads on wheelchairs.

“Government wants to provide facilities to special and disabled persons and it is taking every possible measures in this regard. Special and disabled persons have same rights which one ordinary person enjoys,” he said.

Siddiqui further said that companies building bridges would not only adopt it but also take maintenance responsibilities and they would also enjoy the right to advertise their brands over bridges.

On the occasion, representative of Telenor presented an offer that the company would build pedestrian bridges in different places.

Siddiqui stressed plantation on roadside, traffic improvement, development of roads and sewerage system. He further said that for implementation of these decisions, corporations were being taken into confidence under corporate social responsibilities.
