KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must raise the issue of Dr Aafia Siddiqui in his address to the General Assembly of United Nations, demanded the participants of a demonstration staged here on Tuesday.

The demonstration was arranged jointly by Aafia Movement and civil society organizations in front of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) to urge the prime minister to raise the issue of Aafia in the general assembly and do not miss this opportunity to highlight this important matter.

Aafia Movement convener Dr Fowzia Siddiqui said two years before PM Nawaz Sharif had promised to play his due role in early release of Aafia, and now it is time to fulfil this promise. She said if the politicians fail to walk their talk it harms their own credibility and political image. She said the whole nation had welcomed the promise of Mian Nawaz Sharif at that time and today the nation still waits the release and repatriation of Aafia Siddiqui.

She said when an American Senator could demand the release of Aafia and declare the judge Richard Berman who had handed 86-year cruel sentence to Aafia a ‘fool’, our own prime minister should also show some assertiveness on this national issue. She said the whole Pakistan nation demands the liberation of Kashmir and release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

She said the government of Pakistan should raise this issue seriously with the American administration and also take the Pakistani nation in confidence in this regard.
