Police use water cannon to disperse sugarcane farmers

KARACHI: Police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse protesting sugarcane farmers in Karachi when they wanted to march towards the Chief Minister House on Saturday.

Cane formers belonging to different parts of the Sindh held a protest outside the Karachi Press Club against what they called discrimination of Sindh government towards the sugarcane growers so as to benefit financially the notorious sugar mill mafia in Sindh province.

The protestors started to march towards the Chief Minister House with a demand to issue government notification for sugarcane support price of at least Rs180 per Maund but the police who stopped them with help of a water cannon and tear gas shelling.

Two growers were injured in the clash while police arrested four others.

Later, a five member-committee was form to discuss the issue with authorities.

The protestors blame that every year in Sindh the government fully favor the sugar mill mafia at the cost of sugarcane growers of the province.
