Polio eradication: Establishment of emergency operation centre ordered

KARACHI: In order to intensify the ongoing anti-polio campaign in Sindh, Chief Minister Sindh has directed for establishment of emergency operation centre (ECO) for polio eradication in the Chief Minister House Karachi with immediate effect as per recommendation of International Monitoring Board and said that by virtue of his strict decisions, he was optimistic to get the status of Sindh as polio free province by 2015.

This he observed while holding a meeting with 10 members delegation of Bill & Melaindo Gates Foundation (BMGF) led by Dr Waqar Ajmal and Doctor Orin Levine at Chief Minister House Karachi today.

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister Sindh said that his government was giving priority and lot of importance to eradicate the polio menace and had adopted strict polices in this regard. He said that unfortunately, we were experiencing insurgency like situation at Northern areas of country that had caused the migration of families with un- vaccinated children and criminals infecting other children and threaten the polio teams respectively in this province, especially at Karachi.

He said that it was evident from the fact that we had 11 polio positive cases in Sindh, out of these 10 were from such troubled areas of Karachi and one from Sanghar which belonged to migrated families.

He said that now strict instruction had been passed for attending 100% coverage of anti-polio campaign in the province and all the deputy commissioners and other concerned officers would be made responsible for negligence.

He said that many transfers and inquiries of such failure had been initiated and the action had made officers more serious for polio eradication. Lauding the role of WHO and other foreign donor agencies, NGO and polio fighting organization, the Chief Minister Sindh said that Sindh government had supplemented its financial, technical and administrative steps many times to make anti-polio campaign more success.

The Chief minister assured the delegation that emergency operation centre for polio eradication had been made functional here at Chief Minister House and another wide space for their collective efforts would be provided to them within a week time so that they could bring all stakeholders under one-roof and could work as one team concept for eradication of polio and conducting routine immunization.

Doctor Waqar Ajmal, while talking in the meeting said that globally Pakistan was in difficult position as so far menace of polio was concern. He said that Bill Gates had put Pakistan at top of its agenda. He recommended for foolproof security to the polio teams.
