Polio vaccination under new method begins in October

KARACHI: National Technical Focal Person of Polio Monitoring Cell, Dr Altaf Bosan, said on Saturday that polio vaccination would be administrated through new injectable method in high-risk Union Councils of three big cities of Pakistan from October, first time in country’s history.

While talking to PPI, Dr Altaf Bosan said efforts are under way to launch polio vaccination campaign through injection in three big cities of the country: Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. He said the federal government has suggested the provincial governments to start polio vaccination drive in high-risk UCs of these cities under new method from the month of October.

He said it was decided that children under 5 years age would be administrated polio vaccine via injection. He said polio vaccination through injection was successfully practiced in different countries to enhance their immunization beside traditional polio vaccination in order to eliminate the crippling disease.

Dr Bosan said initially polio vaccination through injection would be administrated in high-risk UCs of Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar and federal government suggested provinces to launch drive in next month under new method. He said provincial governments have started their efforts to make strategy in this regard and Sindh health department has already done enough work.

He said aim of launching polio vaccine through injection is to strengthen the immune system of children in high-risk UCs of big cities. He said if the provincial authorities managed to complete their arrangements in October then surly special polio drive would be launched next month as vaccination is available for campaign.
