KARACHI: Leaders of different political parties have regretted over inordinate delay in release and repatriation of the daughter of the nation, Dr Aafia Siddiqui, and said that only a Pakistani government that is truly independent, politically and economically, can take serious steps in this regard.

PTI leader Justice (retd) Wajeehuddin Ahmed told Pasban e Pakistan that only a true independent government can take serious steps for securing release and repatriation of Dr Aafia. He said the governments do have their own problems, adding only governments that are independent politically and economically can take a firm stand on the issues pertaining to the basic rights of their citizens.

He said in the absence of such a government, the release of Aafia seems not possible. He said the anti-Islamic forces are trying to tarnish the image of Islam with the help of some so-called religious quarters, that is why when people talk about the rights of some oppressed Muslim personalities; they are considered sympathizers of terrorists.

He said for the release of Dr Aafia it needs an independent government in Pakistan. He said it also needs a strong and united voice of the people of Pakistan on this issue; otherwise, many other Ramzans would pass with Dr Aafia in detention.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Taj Haider said their government during its tenure had tried to secure the release of Aafia Siddiqui. He said now it is the responsibility of the sitting government to take urgent steps so that Aafia is released from the US prison. He said the holy month of Ramzan is the month of release of innocent people. The government of Pakistan should take serious steps in this regard.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) general secretary Liaquat Baloch said it is very sad that a Muslim lady had been jailed in the USA for a long time and braving cruelties and violation of her basic rights. He said the government of Pakistan is not serious for the release of the daughter of the nation. He said ignoring this serious issue by our rulers is regretful.

Religious scholar and administrator of Jamia Binooria Mufti Naeem said the government of Pakistan is not sincere towards the issue of Aafia Siddiqui. He said if the government had taken serious and sincere efforts Dr Aafia Siddiqui would have spent this Ramzan with her family and children.
