Politics: (PTI govt fails to fulfil promises of small dams)September 15, 2015
ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has failed to fulfil its promises of constructing small hydel dams and overcome the problem of load shedding in the province.
According to a report, the PTI chief Imran Khan during his election campaign had announced to construct 350 dams in the province but despite passage of two and a half years, physical work on any project has not been launched so far.
Interestingly, the provincial government has over Rs 25 billion in its hydel development fund but instead of allocating it for the construction of dams, this huge amount has been invested in stock market.
According to the white paper issued by the provincial government, it was pointed out in 2013 that feasibility of 15 new hydel projects has been completed while MOUs were signed for construction of two dams in Kohistan but no project has been mentioned in the current budget.
The provincial government also did not allocate any significant amount for the construction of dams in the three budgets that reflects that it is not serious to address the issue.
PTI Chief Imran Khan, in his public addresses before the elections, had been saying that he has completed homework for construction of small dams to produce cheap electricity in the KP but no step has so far been taken in this regard.
