President chairs presentation on GIKIJuly 6, 2014
Islamabad: President Mamnoon Hussain Monday reiterated pledge of the present government to accord top priority to the promotion of higher education in the country.
He urged the country’s leading institutes and universities to focus on setting a standard of excellence in education and research in all fields especially engineering sciences and technology so as to cope with the growing requirements of a knowledge based economy in the country and further promote scientific and technological development.
The President said this during a presentation given to him by Management of Ghulam Ishaq Khan (GIK) institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology at Aiwan-e-Sadr.The presentation was attended by Mr. Zahid Hamid, Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Kamran Ali Qureshi, Secretary Science and Technology, Prof Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman Higher Education Commission(HEC), Dr Muhammad Yayha Khawaja, member(S&T & IT)Planning Commission and other senior officials.
From GIKI side those present during the meeting included among others Engr. Shams ul Mulk, President GIKI, Kh. Zaheer Ahmed, SAPM/member Board of Governors, GIKI, Mr. Shakil Durrani, executive Director SOPREST and Mr. Jahangir Bashar, Rector, GIKI.
Engr. Shams ul Mulk, President GIKI and President, SOPREST (Society for the promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology) and Mr. Jahangir Bashar, Rector GIKI gave a detailed briefing about the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute , its genesis, management, academic pursuits In the field of engineering and Technology, aims ad objectives of the institute , research development and other achievements international linkages, and various ongoing and future plans and projects of the GIKI in the field of engineering sciences and technology.
Giving presentation, the President, who is also chancellor of the GIKI, was apprised that GIKI, an autonomous and independently chartered university in the private sector is ranked No 3 by the HEC in Engineering category and No. 1 in private sector.
Regarding academic activities, the meeting was informed that the annual intake of students at the GIKI has increased from about 280 in 2008 to 420 today while over 3800 students have so far graduated from the GIKI including about 280 MS and 54 PhDs.
About Faculty at the GIKI, President GIKI said that the institute strives to attract faculty of outstanding talent and ability to provide the students a supporting and enabling environment adding that PhD faculty in GIKI Increased from 32 in 2008 to 42 today. The meeting was also apprised about the existing status of the industrial linkages of the institute and the collaboration of the GIKI with various foreign institutes including leading universities in Turkey, USA, UK, China and Ukraine.
Highlighting some recent student’s achievements of GIKI, the President was informed that students of GIKI won ‘Mobilink Rising Star Competition 2014 ‘that was launched as a means to inculcate innovation, passion and leadership qualities amongst the talented youth and that GIKI students advanced to world Finals of Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014 in Seatle, USA, after winning Natrional Finals and world semifinals. GIKI team will represent Pakistan at Microsoft Imagine Cup Seattle USA, the home of Microsoft.
Giving details of the meeting, Press secretary to the President, MS Saba Mohsin Raza said that the President stated that allocation of record all time high budget, Rs. 60.369 billion this year for higher education demonstrate the priority the government accords to the promotion of higher education sector in country adding that the government will invest more in the education sector so as to put the country on the path for progress and prosperity.
The President on the occasion emphasized the need for greater collaboration between the GIKI and the industry to promote research, job creation and preparing the youth of the country to efficiently meet the demands of the market besides being able to compete at the global level in the fields of engineering and technology.
The President also urged for developing and strengthening linkages of the institute with the reputed international universities so as to benefit from the global research, experiences and expertise especially in the field of science and technology and said that country’s development relies on the advancement in science and technology.
The delegation of GIKI thanked the President for meeting and his keen interest in the promotion of education in the county and assured that GIKI would leave no stone unturned in its pursuit for excellence in education and research in engineering sciences and technology.
The President assured all out support and patronage to the Ghulam Ishaq Khan institute in its educational pursuits and plans and the promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan.
