Reconstruction of Earthquake Affected SchoolsOctober 7, 2015
Peshawar: The KP Minister for Elementary & Secondary Education Mohammad Atif has said that the provincial government has pledged an amount of Rs. 3.7 billion to be provided to rebuild the 760 schools destroyed by the 2005 earthquake even though it was the responsibility of the federal government to rebuild these schools but it failed to complete the task, hence the provincial government led by PTI took the matter in its hands and will fulfil our promise of an educated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Minister stated that Federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government have yet to reconstruct around 2 thousand educational institutions destroyed by the earthquake in Hazara Division
. He said the earthquake of 2005 caused devastation in large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, despite the fact that reconstruction of the destroyed schools was the responsibility of the Federal Government.
The provincial minister said that earthquake created havoc in the lives of people and caused large scale devastation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and educational institutions were not an exception.
He said that accordingly a strategy was developed to reconstruct the damaged entities. The details of schools included in the ERRA strategy and non-strategy are as under. Earthquake Strategy schools: 2909, Earthquake Non-Strategy school: 760, Total 3669.
The Minister said that a total of 2909 schools are included in the ERRA Strategy out of which construction of 1557 have been completedand1352 are in progress. In the 1352 schools 600 schools are in design/tendering stage and require Rs. 3482.406 million while progress on 356 and 396 schools are 0-50% and 50-100% respectively and require a total of Rs. 6582.822 million. It is to mention that Prime Minister had announced an amount of Rs. 4 billion but that has not been released to ERRA so far.
For the earthquake non-strategy schools the Minister Education maintained that the Elementary and Secondary Education Department has formulated an ADP scheme in the name of Reconstruction of 760 non-strategy schools earthquake affected schools at a total cost of Rs. 3700 million and the DDWP has approved 320 PC-Is in this respect, he concluded.
