Remove roof racks of minibuses before heat waveMarch 30, 2016
Karachi: Citizens have demanded of the provincial government of Sindh to remove the roof racks from minibuses in Karachi before the expected heat wave in the larger public interest to save precious lives.
Last year hundreds of people have died in Karachi of sunstroke and many of them were commuters travelling on the roofs of minibuses. They died due to direct exposure to extreme heat. The provincial government of Sindh has still to remove the rooftops from the minibuses of Karachi, though the Supreme Court of Pakistan a couple of years back had instructed it to do so.
Everyday hundreds of thousands of commuters in Karachi travel while perching on the roofs of minibuses. However, the government has turned its blind eye towards this issue. Now and then commuters fall from the roof racks of speedy minibuses and lose their life or limbs. However, the powerful nexus of the transporter mafia and provincial government bureaucracy is only concerned about maximizing the profits of minibus operators.
The citizens of Karachi have earnestly appealed to apex judiciary and the provincial government of Sindh to order removal of the roof racks from minibuses in Karachi before the expected heat wave in the larger public interest.
