KARACHI: Traffic issue has again messed up all the system in Saddar area as rerouting failed, which was meant to improve the traffic flow and provide better facilities to the people.

The plan that was mapped by Transport and Communication Department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation seems to have no more in effect properly as many buses that were rerouted could be seen all the day on Preedy Street congesting traffic flow and making life of business hub miserable.

The buses have to enter routes along Tibet Center, but they are operating on routes passing along Taj Complex and Tragedy Lane, dodging the traffic police’s inadequate surveillance.

In charge of Preedy Traffic Police Station, Sub-Inspector Muhammad Siddiq said that it was the fault of Garden police station that let them enter wrong way from MA Jinnah Road.

“We cannot move them back after getting entered in order to run smooth traffic flow. We just charge them with a fine of Rs500 for the violation each time. I had suggested the authorities to install a big board for public information about the rerouting of the buses that was carried out after 50 years,” he said.

Siddiq also acknowledged that some policemen might be getting peanut amount in bribe. “I cannot guarantee you for each and every individual, however as far as police station was concerned, there was no such thing that we as a whole have made any deal with the bus owners,” he said.

On the other hand, DSP Garden Traffic police station Taimoor, concealing the truth, completely ruled out if any such violation existed.

When asked, Commissioner Karachi Shaoib Ahmed Siddiqui refrained from commenting on police’s taking bribe.

Some drivers and conductors told PPI that they were either challaned with Rs200 to Rs2000 or most of the time they bypassed policemen by giving them Rs100 for each turn.

The rerouting plan was applied since April 8, 2014. The roads and areas on which traffic was rerouted were MA Jinnah road, Mansfield Street, Rafique Shaheed road, Sarwar Shaheed road, Dawood Pota road, Sagheer Shaheed road, Shahra-e-Liaquat, Fleet Club, Preedy Street and Karachi Cantonment.

The buses were of route numbers: 1-D, 1-E, 1-L, 4-H, 11-C, 17-I, 19-D, 20, X-3, X-9, X-10, X-17, Z-2, U-1, H-2, F-5, Y-2, 17, 17-H, 17-J, 17-K, 61-A, U, U-4, D-6, 9-C, D-3, 16, C-2, C-1, 2D, 2-K, 4-K, 4-L, 4-M, 5-C, 6, G-3, 9-A, D, Y, UTS-12, 44-A, 15-A, 1-C, X-2 and Mashriq Coach.
