KARACHI: Director Machinery Pool Depot Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Noman Arshad said on Thursday that around Rs200 million were required for proper maintenance of cleaning machineries and vehicles in order to meet the demand of the city specially during Eid-ul-Adha.

“Though we have got adequate number of machinery and vehicles, but the problem lies with lack of funds for their maintenance as around 40 percent of the vehicles were standing idle for several years that had developed some faults. These days we do not have the money even to repair these special mechanical cleaning machines that were bought during the tenure of former mayor Karachi Mustafa Kamal,” he said.

It may be recalled that mechanical cleaning machines worth about Rs1billion were purchased from Turkey and they were parked soon after their purchase.

Noman Arshad said that budget should have been increased with the increase of population and passage of time but during the tenure of Kamal Karachi had received Rs42 billion while for the current year Karachi had got only Rs6 billion for any and every kind of development works.

Arshad said that if all the machinery had been working properly the cleaning of the city could be managed without much problem. Lack of functioning machines had caused the garbage piled up at so many locations in the city.

He said that KMC desperately needed all these machines on roads and streets as Eid-ul-Adha was fast approaching. KMC workers had to work day in and day out to clear all the garbage before Eid and after it to provide relief to the citizens. If KMC had even 100 vehicles in working condition it would be able to meet the demand of the Eid cleaning.

The director said that a summary request for reimbursement of funds had been sent to the Sindh government and it was hoped that a positive response would be seen soon from the government.

He said that KMC only had that much fund for the maintenance of the machines that it could only do oiling and cleaning of the vehicles, while buying parts or doing proper maintenance was out of question.
