Rs299,000 fine charged from profiteers

KARACHI: In a massive crackdown against profiteers, 223 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 299000 fine for selling commodities above government rates.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.

He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Civil Line, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi Town, New Karachi, Bin Qasim, Ibrahim Hyderi, New Karachi, Model Colony, Landhi and Korangi.

In the crackdown, 42 milkmen, 10 shopkeepers of general commodities, 22 chicken sellers, 67 vegetable sellers and 82 fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while 15 persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
