Rs39.91m embezzlement case: SHC seeks NAB’s comments on bail applicationNovember 9, 2015
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday sought comments from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the bail application of Mumtaz Ali Channa, an accused of embezzling Rs 39.91 million.
Mumtaz Ali Channa, former accountant of Mirpur Bathoro, district Sajawal, is currently in National Accountability Bureau’s custody for allegedly issuing cheques on fake vouchers in his service term.
SHC bench headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto heard the bail plea filed by the accused requesting the court to grant him a bail as he has nothing to do with the embezzlement or corruption.
The petitioner thorough his counsel submitted that he remained an accountant of Mirpur Bathoro of district Sajawal from 2012 to 2013 and during this tenure, he served with honesty and sincerity. He submitted that in April this year NAB started an inquiry against him and he was taken into custody on 5th November.
According to NAB, Channa along with Taluka Municipal Officer of Mirpur Bathoro was involved issuing 55 bearer cheques without any work undertaken on ground and without preparation of the documents. NAB stated that the accused had misappropriated Rs 39.91 million of Mirpur Bathoro while misusing his powers.
The petitioner requested the court to declare the ongoing investigation against him as null and void, and unlawful. The court was requested by Channa to grant him a bail as according to him, his hands are clean from corruption.
After hearing the arguments, SHC bench directed NAB to file comments in this regard.
