Khairpur: At least 15 people died and 40 others injured in clashes between the activists of Pakistan Peoples’ Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and other poll-related incident here on Saturday during the polling of local government elections. Army was called in to control the situation.
Police and rescue sources said 15 people including a SHO, and workers of Pakistan Tahreek e Insaf (PTI), and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) died and about 50 others injured in violent clashes between rival political groups during the polling process on Saturday. Five accused including candidates were arrested.
They said clash was started between Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentrain (PPP) workers and PML-F activities belonging to Farooqi and Junejo communities at polling station-2 and two other polling stations at Village Wayio Jaunejo of union council Daraza Sharif.
Both groups fought with sophisticated weapons, wooden clubs and stones. At least people 11 people were killed while 12 others were injured in clashes.
One injured Abdul Hameed was brought to Gambat hospital while other injured were brought to the Civil Hospital Khairpur.
The dead bodies were yet to be removed to hospitals as cross firing was continued till fling this story.
Ranipur police said a large contingent of police was rushed to control the situation. However, villagers told reporters that situation was very critical and the police were not summoning courage to intervene. They said the villagers were shifting the injured and bodies themselves.
However, rangers and police cordoned off the area. All polling stations were declared ‘most sensitive’ by the district administration Khairpur.
SSP Khairpur Pir Mohammad Shah confirmed death of 12 people and injuries to 15 persons. He said army has been called in.
Commissioner Sukkur Abbas Baloch told media that he himself is going to the site of incident. He said heavy contingents of law enforcement agencies have surrounded the area. He said now the situation is under control.
However, it was feared that the death toll might rise, as many inured were in critical condition and some injured were yet to be removed to hospitals.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed qaim Ali Shah has taken strong notice of the clahses and summoned report from Inspector General Sindh police. He also directed the DIG and Rangers officials to control the situation. Khairpur is the home district of the chief minister.
In another clash, one Urs Rajer, an activist of PML-F was killed and five others injured at polling station of Misri Shah of tauka Kotdiji in clash between PPP and PML-F workers
Earlier, polling of the local government elections started in over 796 polling stations of 8 talukas of district Khairpur.
Candidates belonging to PPP, PML-F, PTI, JUI and independents were in contest. This was the first time that PTI men were contesting on over 200 seats in various union councils.
The turnout was remained above 50 percent as the candidates succeeded to bring their voters to polling stations.
A candidate 0f PML-F Mohammad Sadoro boycotted the election from Khairpur Ward-5 Jillani Mohalla, Khairpur where Syed Amjad Ali Shah, a relatives of Sindh Chief Minister was contesting the polls. He complained that Amjad Ali Shah arrived with armed persons and starting rigging; therefore, he boycotted the election.
Clashed were also reported amongst the PTI, PML-F, PPP, and independent candidates at many other polling stations.
A PML-F worker, Fakeer Urs Rajer was killed at polling station Misri Shah near village Nawab Wasan of taluka Kotdiji while other three were hurt by the firing of PPP activists.
However, SHO Sadarji Bhatyoon police, Abdul Sattar Kalhoro died due to heart attack during duty in very tense atmosphere. An activist of PTI Hidayatullah Suprio also died of heart attack at polling station Gambat.
Two accused Malook Mengwar and Zafar Shar were arrested by SSP Amjad Shaikh and ranger Colonel Asif Aijaz when they were rigging the polls at polling station of c houndiko in taluka Nara.
One person was hurt at the polling station Shafi Mohammad Shahani of UC Naseem Kharal.
Three persons were injured at polling station Naseer Fakeer Jalalani of UC Bozdar Wada where PTI and PML-F candidates boycotted the election.
Seven people were injured at polling stations of Paro Khan and Tando Musti.
Four persons, Mohammad Ali, Azam , Mohammad Ali and Ali Bux of PML-F were injured at polling station Jhando Mushaik. One personwas injured at polling station Baberloi.
Five persons of PTI and PML-F were injured at polling station Saeed Suhag, where PML-F candidate boycotted the election after heavy rigging by rivals.
Three people were injured at polling station Jalalani of UC Setharja where two agents of PPP candidates were also arrested.
Rival candidates alleged that local PPP leaders entered at polling station of Law Collage in Ward-13 of MC Khairpur where they barred hundreds of women voters who were supporter of PTI and other rival parties.
