Peshawar: A high level emergency meeting was held here on Thursday with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senior Minister for Health Shahram Tarakai in the chair to review the situation and chalk out future plan after three new cases of polio virus surfaced in the province.
The meeting analyzed various factors behind the existence of polio virus inspite rigorous polio campaign. The meeting was told that three new polio cases had been detected one each in district Peshawar, Nowshera and Hangu out of them two children are Afghan refugees living in Hangu and Nowshera, while the third one belonged to Shaheen Muslim Town area of Peshawar.
Besides the high ups of polio Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Peshawar, representatives of World Health Organization, District Health Officers of the concerned districts and other relevant quarters of Health Department attended the meeting.
The participants of the meeting were told that refusals by parents to immunize their children against polio virus, unavailability of children at their homes during campaigns and insufficient immunization coverage in some pockets were the main factors behind the new cases.
The chair directed the high ups of EOC to initiate action against the concerned responsible for insufficient immunization coverage and said that provincial government is in the final and crucial stage of eradicating polio various virus and in such a stage the government cannot afford any kind of negligence or mistake adding that eradication of polio virus from the province by the end of 2016 is on the top of provincial government’s agenda which cannot be compromised at any cost.
Shahram Khan made it clear that in case of any such negligence or mistake the concerned officials of partner organizations would be held equally responsible as the official of health department and action will be taken against them as well.
The meeting decided to review the polio campaign micro plan of the affected union councils and to focus more attention on high risk union councils in the upcoming campaigns.
The meeting also reviewed threadbare the last three polio campaigns carried out across the province. It was pointed out that beside few high risk pockets of the province, polio campaigns in the rest of the provinces have yielded very satisfactory results and so far the set targets have been achieved by cent percent which has also been acknowledged internationally.
The meeting directed the district health managers to ensure the achievements of polio campaigns target as per targets as per the measurable performance indicators developed under the national action plan.
The chair also directed both the high ups of EOC and the DHOs to personally visit the high risk UCs, involve the local elected representatives and local community to make the polio campaigns effective and result oriented. The meeting also decided to depute polio teams in the high risk Union Councils on permanent basis.
