KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday sought an explanation from provincial police chief for flouting its orders regarding promotion of police officials. The single bench comprising Justice Muneeb Akhtar was seized with the hearing of contempt of court application filed by Rao Mursaleen, Mitho Khan and six other sub-inspectors, seeking contempt proceedings against IG Sindh for defying the court orders.

Applicants represented Malik Altaf submitted that IG Sindh had constituted a four-member committee on 17 September 2012 for considering promotion cases of senior police officials. They told the judge that on recommendation of committee, they were promoted to the rank of sub-inspector (BS-14) and a notification was issued in this regard.

Later, on 10 February 2014, notification regarding their promotions was withdrawn and they were demoted to previous rank. The applicants stated that SHC bench while disposing of their lawsuit had directed IG Sindh to decide their promotion cases within four weeks. However, such orders were not implemented, they added.

The bench issued notice to IG Sindh, asking him to give reasons as to why the court orders were not implemented. Hearing of case was adjourned by April 29.
