Sindh Govt Children Hospital’s expanded portion still non-functional

KARACHI: The expanded portion of Sindh Government Children Hospital North Karachi, which was completed in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) about six month ago, could not be made functional yet for general public yet due to the provincial health department’s lethargy, it was learned Tuesday.

The provincial health department is planning to run this hospital under public-private partnership. The hospital’s up-gradation work was completed in record 10-months period with the cost of over Rs1 billion, but the inauguration of the new building could not be held so far, causing unrest among citizens. The hospital’s administration has sent a summery to the health department for formal inauguration of the new building, but nothing could be get in this regard.

The hospital’s administrative official said on anoynomity that with the healthcare’s up-gradation, beds facilities had been expanded to 250. “Now we can accommodate 250 patients at a time and can provide facilities such as operation theatres, medical and surgical ICUs, nursery, incubators, ventilator unit, surgery facilities, orthopedic unit, diagnosis facilities as well as treatment of other child diseases,” he explained.

The hospital has become second largest children healthcare institution in the city after National Institute of Child Hospital (NICH). He said project had been completed with an aim to provide advanced paediatric care facilities to children in Karachi.

Earlier, the hospital had only 50 beds and poor equipment, but after this project, now we have 250 beds and good quality equipment which would improve the patients’ care services at hospital, he added. He said attendance of Outpatient Department (ODP) will be increased to 1,000 after opening of new building and number of patients would be doubled in near future.

On the other hand, provincial health department could not start recruitment of doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other skilled staff to run the hospital so far as a result, opening of new building has been delayed.

Secretary Health Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo while talking to PPI said that provincial health department was planning to run Sindh Government Children Hospital under public-private partnership and the hospital will be made operational very soon.
