Sindh minister for banning wheat import from UkraineOctober 29, 2014
Karachi: Provincial Minister for Food Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has demanded federal government to immediately ban on import of wheat from Ukraine because it will badly affect the prices of wheat in local market.
Federal Minister Sikandar Hayat Bostan has assured Provincial Minister for Food that the federal government will take the matters seriously and try to resolve it at its earliest. It is to mention here that due to glut of wheat imported from abroad may cause bad effects on wheat and flour produced at local level.
Federal Government had allowed the importers to import 10 lac metric tons wheat from Ukraine and out of which 6.5 lac metric tons wheat has arrived in Pakistan.
Provincial Minister for Food Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has said that the wheat imported from Ukraine is of low standard and it is not good for human consumption. Besides this in a meeting on Wednesday the Sindh Cabinet has also proposed federal government to impose ban on import of wheat and its by-products and also to impose 20% regularity duty on wheat and its by-products either imported by importers and flour millers. The Sindh Cabinet has also proposed federal government to fix support price of Rs.1300 per KG for crop year 2014-15.
Sindh Food Department has directed flour mills to intimate the quantity of wheat stocks and to provide sample of imported wheat to the concerned district food controller for its examination to confirm its quality as per required standard and to be fit human consumption.
