Smoking is root cause of other addictions: expert

Karachi: Drugs are used to overcome grief and get rid of stress but in fact, sorrow and stress end for a few hours but they later come back again. This was stated by renowned psychiatrist Dr Syed Mubin Akhtar while addressing a press conference in connection with World International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Thursday.

He said light addictive substances like tea, coffee, cigarette, hookah, tobacco, niswar, paan, betel nut and heavy addictive substances like cannabis, marijuana, opium, alcohol, heroine or sedative takes the mind away from reality, sorrow, grief, and stress but all of that come back again. He said person’s productivity goes down and body suffers badly. He said addiction causes destruction of social life.

Dr Mubin said smoking is the root cause of other addictions as when smokers are not satisfied by their addiction any more, they try other additive substances like opium. He said a person with addiction not only causes problems for himself but also for all the family and friends. He said drug abuse could affect the brain severely and also cause complicated mental problems. He said many people commit suicide under the influence of drugs.

He said unfortunately, the government was ignoring this problem as narcotic pushers and smugglers were not apprehended. There is no program in the media against this scourge and proper addiction centers are almost absent, he added.

He said addiction is called “mother of all evils”. He said Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said ‘whichever substance is addictive in a large quantity, is prohibited in a small quantity’. He said majority of people with addiction want to quit, but few of them succeed. People who genuinely want to quit fail due to lack of knowledge of preventive measures and proper treatment, he added.
