Social sciences backbone of future development: Moonis Ahmer

KARACHI: Dean Faculty of Social Sciences (formerly Arts) Prof Dr Moonis Ahmer on Thursday said social sciences was the backbone of future development of nations. “Social sciences focuses on society and relationships of individual within a society and teaches humanity in the field of science,” he said while addressing a press briefing at his office regarding renaming of the faculty of Arts and announcing the holding of International Conference on Challenges of Transition in Social Sciences 2014 on December 3-4.

Conference Coordinator and Psychologist Dr Anila Amber Malik, Prof Dr Fateh Muhammed Burfat, Prof Muhammed Sajdin, Prof Dr Nasreen Aslam, Psychologist Dr Qudsia Tariq Prof Kaleem Raza, Prof Waheed-ur-Rehman and other members of the faculty and conference organizing committee were also present on the occasion.

Prof Ahmer said the name of Faculty of Arts had been changed to Faculty of Social Sciences due to the broader scope of social sciences and relevancy. Some improvements would be made in the faculty in which research center would be upgraded to facilitate members and students in studies and Department of Technology would also be added in the faculty.

He said international conferences on social sciences were held earlier in 2006, 2007 and 2008 by University of Karachi (KU), however since 2008 no such conference could be held.

“Such conferences are necessary which improve the behavior and ethics of the society. The conference would be held at Arts Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences. In which experts from around the globe, delegates, diplomats in Pakistan and hundreds of students of master, M-Phil and PhD level would participate. Keynote speaker of the conference would be Prof Dr Imtiaz Ahmed of University of Dhaka,” he said.

The dean said the conference would be held in cooperation with Higher Education Commission. 50 research papers of the faculty students would be presented in the conference comprising on different topics such as intolerance, social cohesion and socio-economic conditions of minorities etc.
