Sports: Cricket: Omar Associates clinches National Seniors Cup title

Karachi:,,, Karachi based Omar Associates clinched their maiden title of 16th National Seniors Cup after registering a five-wicket triumph against Lahore’s Golden Eagles in a day-night climax played at the EME DHA Cricket Ground in Lahore.

Omar Associates have earlier lost the National Final in 2012. Pakistan Veterans Crickets Association (PVCA) has been organizing this Tournament for the last sixteen consecutive years.

Omar Associates won the toss and put Lahore Golden Eagles into bat. Golden Eagles posted a respectable total of 218-9 in allotted 30 overs.

Former Test Player Shahid Anwer scored 48 runs off 46 balls. Bakhtiar Hussain scored 36 runs off 37 balls. Nadeem Farooqi also batted well for the side scoring 30 runs off 24 balls. Off spinner Iqbal Sheikh bowled for Omar Associates capturing three wickets for 36 runs. Skipper Jaffar Qureshi took two wickets for 48 runs.

In response, Omar Associates reached the winning target of 219 runs in 28 overs for the loss of five wickets. Skipper Jaffer Qureshi and former Pakistan player Sajid Ali put an opening partnership of 82 runs before Sajid Ali was out for 27 runs off 27 balls. Skipper Jaffer Qureshi scored a brilliant unbeaten innings of 118 runs scored facing only 78 deliveries with the help of eight sixes and as many boundaries. Nadeem Sheikh scored 40 runs off 28 balls. Former Pakistan player Sajid Akber took two wickets for 42 runs.

Test Cricketer Mohammad Hafeez was the chief guest during the closing ceremony of the comprehensive tournament. Omar Associates skipper Jaffer received Rs. 150,000 while Muhammad Salman, captain of Golden Eagles cashed Rs. 75,000. Jaffer was named Man of the Match of the Final. Nadeem Omar also announced a cash prize of Rs 100,000 for his side Omar Associates for winning the tournament.
