Sports: Tennis: Aqeel, Shahzad duo clinch doubles title

Karachi: The pair of Aqeel Khan and Shahzad Khan annexed men’s doubles title to their name after beating second seed Mohammad Abid and Usman Rafiq in a three-set encounter in 4th Syed Tajammul Abbas Memorial National Ranking Tennis Championship on Monday at PTF Tennis Complex in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, Iman Qureshi clinched ladies singles event title after beating Rida Khalid in straight sets by 6-2, 6-2 score in the summit clash.

In men’s singles final, favorite Aqeel Khan will face third seed Shahzad Khan in the on Tuesday. In the first semifinal, Aqeel beat Heera Ashiq by 6-4, 6-4 score while third seed Shahzad Khan eliminated Ahmed Chaudhry also by 6-4, 6-4 score.

In the boy’s U-18 singles event, eighth seed Talha Zubair made another upset by beating third seed Mohammad Muzammil by 6-1, 6-1 score to secure his unexpected place in the final. In the other semifinal clash, Arham Atique defeated Husnain Manzoor by 6-4, 6-1 score.

In the Boy’s U-14 singles event semis, Mir Shahzaib made a big upset by beating top seed Ilham Khan in straight sets by 6-1, 6-3 score. Fifth seed Saqib Umer also made an upset by eliminating second seeded Yousaf Khan by 6-3, 6-0 score.
