Sports: Tennis: National Ranking Tennis Championship begins in Islamabad

Karachi: The Warid National Ranking Tennis Championship started Saturday with 48 matches being played in men’s and boy’s U18 singles events at S. Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex in Islamabad.

Talha Bin Asif, Talha Zubair, Hamza Malik, Maniya Omar, Syed Yawar Abbas, Aman Atiq, Abdal Haider and Haseeb Yaqoob qualified for the main draw of men’s singles event after winning their respective matches of final qualifying round. A total number of 40 players appeared in the qualifying round.

Syed Nofil Kaleem, Ali Khalid, Saad Abjad, Aman Atiq, M. Muzammil, Hasnain PSB, Hamza Abjad, Arham Atiq, Syed Yawar Abbas, Talha Zubair, Hasnain Manzoor, Talha Bin Asif, Abdal Haider, Sahibzada M. Ali and M. Mudassir moved into the second round of boys U18 event on the opening day.

Unseeded Hamza Abjad pulled a major upset in boys U-18 event after he when he eliminated seventh seed Hamza bin Asif in straight sets by 6-3, 6-2 score.

Earlier, on the day Syed Kaleem Imam, President Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) and Sultan Maqsood Vice President PTF inaugurated the tournament.
