Students enrolment in Sindh has increased to 4.8m: Khuhro

LARKANA: Sindh’s Senior Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has claimed that as compared to last year, the enrolment of students in Sindh has increased to 4.8 million during current year as it was just 4 million last year, and the credit of this goes to technical advisor for education Syed Aijaz Ali Shah.

He was addressing free books distribution ceremony for 2016-17 academic year held at Government Pilot Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday. He said he also wanted Aijaz Shah and his team to check the enrolment in the classes and practically verify the same.

Khuhro expressed resentment that many school teachers of Larkana district had not yet been verified via biometric system and directed the education officers to ensure compliance with the government policy. He said last year, Rs 1.20 billion were spent on text books whereas this year the cost had been increased to Rs 1.60 billion and as many as two crore seventy lac books had been printed out of which 48 lac book sets have been prepared which will soon be delivered to the schools.

Khuhro said that every year one billion rupees are paid by Sindh government to the girl students from class VI to X. Nisar said in Larkana district, as many as 1,83,000 students are getting education and only 51,000 reach at Matric level which is alarming.

He said every year 50,000 youth are given training by Sindh government in different trades and they are also paid monthly stipend. He further claimed that as many as 18,000 teachers had been recruited on merit. He directed the education department officers to make a video of distributing free books among the students and send it to him as evidence.

Chairman Sindh Text Book Board and Additional Secretary, Education Department, Syed Zakir Ali Shah said that after 10th March all schools will be delivered books for free distribution among the students, adding that they are trying to better education standard in Sindh. Syed Aijaz Shah said that best curriculum had been prepared this year which will raise the quality of education but the responsibility ultimately lies with the teachers. Nawab Khokhar, Anwar Khokhar and other officials were also present on the occasion.
