Team coined to avoid draught situation in GadapNovember 21, 2014
KARACHI: On the directive of chief minister Sindh, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has taken notice of acute shortage of water in fear of draught in the mountainous region of Gadap where over 600 villages are located.
To review the situation, the commissioner called an emergency meeting of all the relevant organizations at his office, in which all the issues including acute shortage of water, food and medical facilities were reviewed. The meeting decided to take immediate steps to meet the demand so that the fear of draught could be repelled in Gadap.
Siddiqui directed the assistant commissioner Gadap to present comprehensive report on the issues encountered in the area so that the Sindh government could be communicated.
A team, comprising Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, district municipal corporation and assistant commissioner Gadap, has been constituted to resolve the issues. The team under the supervision of assistant commissioner would ensure provision of water to the villages, established for more than 100 years, through tankers to eradicate the scarcity of water right away so that the lives of livestock could not be affected as well.
Representatives of KWSB, DMC East and West, Development and Environment Commissioner Karachi, Department of Irrigation, Department of Zakat, officers of Special Initiative Department Sindh, assistant commissioner Gadap and other relevant officers were also present on the occasion.
It was decided in the meeting that in cooperation with philanthropists, NGOs and the department of Zakat wheat-flour bags would be distributed in the region. Town health officer would forthwith establish medical camp.
The commissioner expressed concern over the termination of water supply from 100-year-old wells and other sources due to negligence. He said special steps would be taken to rehabilitate the antique wells and KWSB would plan to ensure functioning of the wells.
The meeting deemed tube wells and RO plants to be set up as alternative and decided that Director Planning and Development Syed Shakib Ahmed would devise plan and take practical steps over it sooner the better. While irrigation department would take steps for establishing tube wells.
