KARACHI: Tharparkar district is largely facing managerial problems in terms of food distribution, instead of food shortage. Biotechnology can multiply the existing food production even in the dry land.

These views were expressed by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi (UoK), and Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center (PABIC), while delivering a lecture at the ICCBS-UoK here on Monday.

He said that Pakistan was the sixth most populous country of the world with 185 million people which is expected to be the fourth with 300 million by 2030.

He maintained that around 20 percent Pakistanis were facing acute malnutrition while 10 years back it was 10 percent. Biotechnology is a solution to food problems, and it can bring food security in the country.

“Increasing population is the real challenge for the country. Every year, natural calamities cause great loss to the country’s food production. Biotechnology has potential to increase food production even in the infertile land. The country has made remarkable advancement in biotechnology.

A majority of the Muslim nations are the net importer of food commodities, but Pakistan is included among three Muslim countries, including Turkey and Iran out of 57 nations, who have achieved commercialization of biotech crops. But food inflation is still among the highest in Pakistan,” he said.

The increasing rate of population and the demand of food require appropriate planning at the government level, he said and added that Pakistan had expertise in all fields of sciences, but this expertise was not being used properly for the benefit of the country. He said that biotechnology was the only solution to problems of food crises.

He said that the agriculture lands are being drastically reduced in the country, while the biotechnology is one of the most important scientific tools that can help the country in increasing the agricultural production.
