Karachi: Thatta is an important district of Sindh, but lacks proper facilities to boost its economy. It needs urgently an information technology university, a medical college, a marine engineering college and an industrial zone.

Thatta is a city and capital of Thatta District and will be capital of announced Banbhore Division.  It is a historic town of 220,000 inhabitants in the Sindh province, near Lake Keenjhar, the largest freshwater lake in the country.

Thatta’s major monument, the necropolis at Makli is listed among the World Heritage Sites. The Shah Jahan Mosque, Thatta is also mentioned separately on the tentative list since 1993. Located 100 km (62 mi) east of the provincial capital of Sindh, Karachi, it makes for a practical escape for people from the city seeking to visit the picturesque old town.

Thousands of Karachiites visit Thatta on weekends but there are no proper facilities for them. A network of parks, gardens, hotels, swimming polls, parking lots, eateries, boating facilities and guided sightseeing tours would greatly help in making Thatta a welcome tourist spot for not only Karachiites but whole Pakistanis. Better policing and highway patrolling in the region would also help attracting more families to visit Thatta, Makli, Keenjhar and adjoining areas.

Thatta needs a speedy industrialization. There are some cement and sugar mills units but the geographical position of Thatta, particularly its close access to both Karachi and Hyderabad, availability of land, sea coast and cheap manpower is yet to be fully capitalized. The PPPP government has proposed to set up a new city of Zulfiqarabad here near Jhirk twon. It also formed a Zulfiqarabad Development Authority.

This authority wants a high-speed railway to link the proposed city with Karachi. The plans also include setting up hotels, seaside resorts, schools, colleges, universities, mosques, hospitals, factories and a new seaport. The plans include kilometers of bicycle lanes crisscross the city, whose population would eventually reach 10 million. This ambitious plant was aimed at to boost urbanization and industrialization of the region, but like other important projects of this government, the Zulfiqarabad is facing snail-paced progress, mainly due to lack of a proper governance system in the province.

Thatta immediately requires an information technology university, a medical college, a marine engineering college and an industrial zone. It also needs a plan to beautify the town and upgrade its roads and streets and improve its water supply and sewerage system. It is a must to link Thatta to main railway line on urgent basis. The provincial government needs to utilize its resources and energies to modernize Thatta and develop it into an urban center on fast-track basis. Civil Hospital Makli also need upgradation into a teaching hospital with urgent opening of a medical college here in government sector.

The government also needs to ensure speedy work on the proposed city of Zulfiqarabad, which would pay way for swift industrialization and urbanization of Sindh province.
