KARACHI: After receiving a large number of complaints from drivers for non-issuance of registration number plates to their vehicles from Excise and Taxation Department, the Karachi Traffic Police Department has shelved its drive initiated few weeks back against the fancy number plates in the metropolis, said the DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Saturday.

Talking to PPI, DIG Amir said that as many as 3,641,800 vehicles are registered only in Karachi under Excide and Taxation Department while a large number of vehicles had not been issued their registration number plates that are creating hindrance for bringing better traffic system in the metropolis.

He said when they had initiated the drive against such drivers that were being violating the traffic law by attaching the fancy number plates with their vehicles, but they found many drivers had given letters issued from Excise and Taxation Department mentioning that the drivers had applied for the number plates for their vehicles but Excise and Taxation Department has no sufficient stock for a while to be issued them.

DIG said they had inaugurated an advance system of Traffic Violation Evidence System (TVES) in their department that could ensure monitoring and challaning system. It could punish traffic law violators with video evidence installed along different spot of the city. He said if any driver found is violating the traffic rule; they would get challans at their houses through courier as Karachi Traffic Police Department is working in collaboration with CPLC for making this system successful in the metropolis. TVES system is in completed unless the vehicles were not being issued number plates from the relevant department, he added.

Amir said the TVES will be functional very short span of time in the city but they want cooperation from other relevant departments so that they could make this system successful for betterment of the traffic system in the city.
