Traffic jams increase due to encroachments

Karachi: Contrary to the claims of Karachi administration that encroachments would be removed before Eid, encroachers have occupied roads and footpaths even in the areas that were previously encroachment-free.

The glaring example of this nexus between the Pathara mafia and corrupt officials is Saddar Empress Market. It was free from encroachments for about first two weeks of Ramzan and anti-encroachment team used to be present in their permanent camp before the Empress Market.

However, in the third week of Ramzan hundreds of vending carts suddenly dotted this busy area and at the same time the camp of anti-encroachment team was abruptly closed down or shifted somewhere else. Presently the whole area from the New Preedy Street up to the Regal Chowk is occupied by Pathara encroachments and citizens believe till the Eid no action would be taken against them.

Situation in other market areas of the city is not different also, because the administration in Karachi hardly walk their talk, especially when it is the issue of removal of encroachments from footpaths and roads, be it Saddar, Empress Market, New M A Jinnah Road, Liaquatabad, Bolton Market or other bazaar areas.
