KARACHI: In no any area of the city traffic signals will not be turned off after midnight or put them to flash amber light, says traffic police DIG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh.

Non-functional traffic signal during night hours are causing traffic accidents and posing risk for commuters and pedestrians in the metropolis. As many as 164 traffic signals were installed in the city out of which 116 are working and 48 are non functional that are causing traffic jams and accidents in the city, said Karachi Traffic Police, DIG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Thursday.

He said now the traffic lights in Karachi would work round-o-clock.

Dr Amir said these faulty traffic signals should be maintained within short span of time for betterment of traffic regulation which is the responsibility of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and DHA to maintain and install new traffic signals in the city.

He said he already has asked KMC’s Transport Department to rectify the faulty traffic signals and maintain these non-functional signals on urgent basis which are causing troubles for traffic.

Amir said the city of two million plus population has only 164 traffic signals installed in all five districts of Karachi which are not enough to control the traffic flow.

He said at least on all busy roads new traffic signals must be installed as to ensure smooth flow of traffic. He said at least 118 traffic signals were installed in South District while only one signal is installed in Malir district which sadly is faulty. It is dire need to install new traffic signals equally divided in all districts, he suggested.
