KARACHI: At least 11 traffic signals installed on different intersection of Karachi9 roads are being switched off on daily basis by some traffic section officers to facilitate the VIP movement, said KMC’s Transport and Communication Department Assistant Executive Engineer Mohammad Azeem on Wednesday.

Talking to PPI, Azeem said there is dire need to install new traffic signals in the metropolis for ensuring a smooth flow of traffic but they are unable to do so due to acute shortage of funds at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

He said at least 106 traffic signals were installed by KMC’ Transport Department in the city while 69 other traffic signals by the Defence Housing Authority (DHA). Due to unavailability of funds, the KMC can hardly maintain the traffic signals, he said.

Azeem said that they have already asked Karachi Traffic Police authorities several times to take action against the officers who are involved in turning the traffic signals off without any reason, and thus causing traffic congestion.

He said it has been observed that some traffic signals that are in good and operational condition are kept turned off at different intersection of city including Numaish Chowrangi, Gurumandir, II Chundrigar Road, Habib Bank building at II Chundrigar Road, Sarwar Shaheed Road, Preedy Street and Jinnah Avenue.
