KARACHI: At least 11 traffic signals at different intersection of city’s roads are being switched off by some traffic policemen to facilitate VIP movement, causing trouble to commuters, said a KMC official.

Talking to PPI, KMC’s Transport and Communication Department Assistant Executive Engineer Mohammad Azeem said that they had already asked Karachi Traffic Police authorities several times to take action against the officers involved in turning the traffic signals off without any reason, which cause traffic congestion.

He said some traffic signals are kept turned off at different intersection including Numaish Chowrangi, Gurumandir, II Chundrigar Road, Habib Bank building at II Chundrigar Road, Sarwar Shaheed Road, Preedy Street and Jinnah Avenue. Azem told that they had never turned off any signal after midnight but some traffic signals had been turned off by traffic police after midnight which is too dangerous for commuters and other road users as they have to cross the intersection on putting their lives on risk.

Azeem said there is dire need to install new traffic signals in the metropolis for ensuring a smooth flow of traffic but they are unable to do so due to acute shortage of funds at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

He said at least 106 traffic signals were installed by KMC’ Transport Department in the city while 69 other traffic signals by the Defence Housing Authority (DHA). Due to unavailability of funds, the KMC can hardly maintain the traffic signals, he said.
