Tribute paid to Ahsan Yahya, Mujeebur RehmanNovember 18, 2015
KARACHI: Tributes were paid to senior journalist Ahsan Yahya and senior photographer Mujeebur Rehman at a condolence meeting, organised by the Dawn Unit of Karachi Union of Journalists, at the Dawn Newsroom on Thursday.
The speakers recalled the services of Ahsan Yahya for the profession and the newspaper. Mr Yahya served Dawn for about 50 years after joining the institution in 1952. He remained a magazine editor, features editor and as supplement in charge before his retirement in 1998 and continued till 2006. His father Molvi Mohammad Yahya Tanha was a poet, lawyer and author, whose books Miratushura Sairul Musanifeen were printed in Dehli and many others on different subjects. Imam Ubaidullah Nasiruddin Shaheed Sonipat Haryana India was the grandfather of Yahya Sahib.
Mujeeb ur Rehman joined Dawn in February 1968 and offered services for Illustrated Weekly of Pakistan, Herald, Star, Hurriet and Dawn, and made photography of 1988 Ojhri camp incident, Islamic summit conference, and covered the first visit of Dilip Kumar as his official photographer.
Mujeeb served Pakistan Association of Press Photographers (PAPP) as its president for seven tenures, and made the life insurance of city’s press photographers. He had to his credit two APNS, two governor Sindh journalist awards which were conferred on him by President Ziaul Haq and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He also organised photojournalists convention. His son is associated with Dawn’s White Star for the last 20 years.
Those who spoke included Editor Dawn Zafar Abbas, senior journalists Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, Khursheed Hyder, Zaheer Ahmed Khan, Arif Mehmood Photo Editor, Dawn Media Group, Faysal Mujeeb son of Mujeebur Rehman, Mustehson Yahya and Ashraf Yahya sons of Ahsan Yahya and Nyla Ashraf, daughter-in-law of Ahsan Yahya.
Later, prayers were offered for those who died recently.
