KARACHI: Two more polio cases emerged in Karachi on Monday, taking the number of polio cases in Karachi to 4 and in Sindh province to 9 since 1st January 2015

Two new polio cases surfaced in Union Council 5 & 6 Gadap Town area of Karachi. The new polio patients are Mudasir and Shayan.

Mudasir son of Khanzada, 22 months old, is resident of UC 5 Gadap and his both legs are affected. He received 0+4 doses of polio vaccine. Shayan son of Shahid Alam, 47 months, is resident of UC-6 Gadap and hisright leg is affected. He received 3+7 doses.

Spokesman Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Sindh for Polio Eradication and Immunization expressed that despite vaccinating children, there has been persistence of the polio virus in the environment which inevitably will result in more polio cases.

“We have devised a strategy to interrupt the virus circulation and the next 6 months are critical; they are the make or break moths for polio.”

The essence of this strategy is ruthless accountability, an honest reassessment of security provision and ensuring its deployment, strengthening the functionality of Provincial EOC and District Polio Control Rooms and strengthening work in high risk union councils through further involving the communities.

The commitment for polio eradication is visible, now a Karachi taskforce has also been notified under the leadership of Commissioner Karachi, we must translate this commitment into action on the ground and interrupt virus transmission, said the spokesman.
