131 illegal blood banks closed in Sindh so far

Karachi: Provincial Project Director/Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) Dr Zahid Hasan Ansari on Monday said total 131 illegal blood banks have been closed across the province since 1989 over violation of the relevant laws. He told PPI that out of total closed illegal blood banks three were run by government, 10 belonged to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and 118 run by privet owners.

He shared the district-wise list of closed blanks banks which showed 29 such blood banks were in Karachi, 16 in Sanghar, 12 in Jacobabad, 11 in Khairpur, 11 in Dadu, 10 in Larkana, 09 in Sukkur, 06 in Nawabshah, 03 in Hyderabad, 04 in Thatta, 03 in Mirpurkhas, 03 in Naushehro Feroze, 02 each in Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Kandhkot and Ghotki, and one each in Matiari, n Jamshoro and Badin.

He informed that number of registered blood banks has reached 172 in the Sindh province with the addition of 10 new blood banks opened in different cities of the province in 2013. He said SBTA received 331 applications for bloods banks out of which 172 cases are approved and 28 under process.

He said ten new blood banks had been registered in year 2013 by SBTA out of which five are in Karachi, two in Khairpur, and one each in Larkana, Dadu and Shaheed Benazirabad.

He said 92 blood banks have been registered in Karachi so far, 19 in Hyderabad, 05 in Jamshoro, 05 in Mirpurkhas, 04 in Sukkur, 02 in Naushehro Feroz, 07 in Sanghar, 04 in Khairpur, 07 in Larkana, 05 in Badin, 01 in Kashmore, 02 in Jacobabad, 06 in Nawabshah, 01 in Shikarpur, 04 in Dadu, 02 in Thatta, 01 in Tharparkar, 02 in Tando Allahyar, 02 in Ghotki and 01 in Umerkot.

He said these blood banks equipped with refrigerators, analyser readers, microscopes, water baths, blood bank coaches, generators, centrifuge machinery, haemoglobin meters and other equipment. He said Hepatitis B and C and HIV-AIDS diagnosis kits were also available at all the points to check the quality of blood as per law and for supply of safe blood to general public.

He said five blood banks were closed in year 2012 in Karachi over violation of safe blood law. He advised the all doctors, consultants, hospitals, clinic, maternity homes, and blood transfusion centers to accept blood and blood products from only blood banks registered by SBTA.

He informed that SBTA has introduced strong monitoring system for registered bloods banks across the province to ensure safe blood supply for patients and also issued warnings to the owners of bloods banks those who were violating the law in this regard.
