The Union of OIC News Agencies participated in the 6th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, held in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana on October 10-11, under the theme of Religious Leaders for a Safe World.
The gathering, held under the auspices of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, aimed at finding ways to defuse crises and conflicts among peoples and consolidating the culture of peace and tolerance between the followers of faiths, and enhancing intercultural, inter-civilizational and interreligious cooperation.
Director UNA Delegations Program Hazem Elsayed Abdo represented the Union following an invitation received from Kazakh Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Bakhit Batyrshaev, who is also Kazakhstan’s permanent representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The meeting was attended by a large number of prominent religious and political leaders from around the world.
Kazakhstan is labeled as a crossroads of civilizations in Eurasia, given the fact that the country has shared a natural border with the world’s major religions Islam, Christianity and Buddhism for several centuries.
The Congress was launched 15 years ago by the initiative of President Nazarbayev, with the first gathering of the representatives of world and traditional religions including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and other faiths, held in Astana on 23-24 September 2003, under the theme of “Interfaith and Inter-Civilizational Dialogue”.
