Amended law interference into varsity affairs: KUTS

KARACHI: Karachi University Teachers Society KUTS here Wednesday rejected the newly passed Act to amend the Sindh varsities laws. The Sindh Universities Laws Amendment Bill 2013 and termed it an attack on independence of government run universities in Sindh.

The Sindh Universities Laws Amendment Bill 2013 presented in Sindh assembly recently through supplementary agenda by Sindh law minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro was passed amid walkout of Muttahida Qaumi Movement MQM.

A KUTS emergency general body meeting held in the Arts Auditorium of Karachi University, with their president Prof Muttahir Ahmed in chair, discussed the amended law and agreed that it was not in the interest of varsities. It said the growing government interference into affairs of universities would prove detrimental for their independent academic and research activities. Political interference would further doom the government run universities of Sindh, it noted.

The meeting welcomed the president and general secretary of Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association FAPUASA for opposing the amended Act and greeted their decision to participate the meeting in Karachi on August 29, to chalk out further strategy.
