Business: Kinnow export may generate good volumes for 2013-14

Islamabad: Pakistan kinnow will have a bumper crop this year (2013-14) with the production of 2.1 to 2.3 million ton. Acting CEO Harvest Tradings, Azam Ishaque has stated this in a press release.

This year export volume expected to be good and export target may be set around 320,000 tons. However in exports this year kinnow will be shipped to Indonesia on zero percent duty; As Indonesia allowed Pakistani kinnow to be shipped to Tanjung Port of Jakarta.

Subsequently the activation of the PTA followed the signing of a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on plant quarantine and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures between Indonesia and Pakistan, in which Indonesia officially acknowledged Pakistan as a pest-free area for kinnow.

On the question of Russian ban on Pakistani fruits, he said Russia is a good market for our fruits especially kinnow, but to increase the volumes, we need to be resolve trust deficit and established banking channels b/w two countries.

The Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of National Food & Security to take cognisance of this alarming situation and raise the issue at diplomatic level to rescind the decision by the Russian government, which might spell colossal loss to the country’s economy at this crucial juncture.
