KARACHI: Traffic police in Karachi will launch campaign against the growing traffic violations very soon. This was announced by DIG Traffic Police, Zafar Bukhari, while speaking at a dinner hosted by Korangi Association of Trade and Industry KATI on Tuesday to honour newly appointed IG Police, Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh. The DIG said that the computerization of traffic violations and personal record of every individual could be done with the cooperation of NADRA and Excise and Taxation Department in order to curb the traffic violations and accidents.
The DIG said that in order to minimize the traffic jams in Korangi Industrial Area, a team of traffic police headed by section officer would be deployed so that heavy traffic to and from industrial areas would be regulated and disciplined. Replying to a question, he said that the Supreme Court had already ordered to curb the menace of public transport plying without number plates, fitness certificates and those of covered with dark glasses.
The traffic police are complying with the order of the apex court and submitting weekly report in this regard. He said that considering the limited force in traffic police and massive number of vehicles plying on Karachi’s roads it was not possible to check violations effectively as most of the staff remains busy in regulating the traffic.
Speaking on the occasion, Patron In Chief KATI, SM Muneer said that the law and order situation of Karachi is getting uncontrollable and if the backbone of the Pakistan’s economy collapses the entire country would be disintegrated and may not survive.
He called upon the government to invoke Article 245 to call the army for restoring peace. He advised the business community to remain cautious when moving in the city. Chairman KATI, Mohammad Zubair Chhaya, said that industry is facing its worst ever time and those industrialists still running their industries despite all ongoing crisis of utilities shortages, ever increasing cost of doing business and worst law and order situation, are pride of the nation.
IG Sind Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh who was called by the President Asif Zardari in emergency has thanked the KATI for honouring him.
