CAPS organizes seminar on Consumers Rights Protection and Role of Government

Peshawar: Speakers at a seminar on “Consumers’ Rights Protection and Role of Government CRP & RoG stressed the need of creating awareness among the masses about their basic rights.

The seminar was organized by Civic Awareness Promotion Society CAPS in collaboration with Straightening Participatory Organisation SPO held here at Press Club on Thursday.

Those spoke in the seminar including Executive Director CAPS Shakeel Wahidullah Khan, Assistance Commissioner AC Peshawar Habibullah Arif, Additional Director Industry Akhundzada Saeed and exProgramme Manager PM Pakistan Television PTV Aziz

They said that the Consumer Protection Act about consumers’ rights had been passed in the North West Frontier Province NWFP in in 1997 but unfortunately no properly implementation had been made since the law existed. They added very petty fine was taken from the culprits with less detention for few days.

They further said from 500 to 2000 rupees as a fine on adulteration, substandard things and price hike were insufficient to curb a crime, therefore, fine must be increased to maximum level and along with more imprisonment for the culprits to stop the consumers’ rights violation at any level.

They suggested that committees at Union Councils level be constituted aimed at protecting the consumers’ related issues. The committees, they said that the government would be bound to protect the consumers’ committees the UCs level.

The committees, they further proposed that their coordination with the local or concerned police stations should be made so that the consumers sans feeling any hesitation could easily register their complaints against shopkeepers.

Shakeel Waheedullah Khan lamented that there was no proper department for the consumers’ protection and the burden was endured by the Industry department, which is already overloaded. He demanded of the High Court to declare a separate Consumers’ Court.
