Cleanliness campaign starts in Karachi

KARACHI: Following the directives of Provincial Minister for Local Government, cleanliness campaign has started in Karachi in this connection KMC Administrator Saqib Soomro visited various areas including Clifton Bilawal Chowrangi, Boat Basin, Sharae Faisal, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, EBM Bridge and inspected cleanliness works being carried out by Municipal staff.

On this occasion, Director General Technical Services Niaz Soomro, Sr. Director Municipal Services Masood Alam and other concerned officers were present.

Administrator Karachi while giving a briefing to electronic media said that there were about 2500 garbage points in the city where thousands tons of garbage exists and cleanliness of which will require some time, however, lifting and shifting of garbage to landfill sites has started which will be carried on by utilizing all available resources so that entire city could be cleaned.

He said that cleanliness of roads, corridors and flyovers will be performed whereas lifting of every type of garbage, debris and other waste items from central corridor and shifting them to allocated locations will be carried out whereas DMCs have been asked to put garbage to allocated dumping sites from where municipal services staff will lift garbage and shift it to the landfill sites.

Administrator Karachi took strict notice of garbage thrown on central road of EBM causeway by DMC East Jamshed Town from which dirt and worse smell was spreading which was affecting traffic flow and citizens due to this were also facing difficulties. He said that request for taking disciplinary action along with suspension of its responsible will be made. He said salaries of cleanliness staff along with employees of grade 1 to 5 will be paid on 1st of month so that they could perform their responsibilities with dedication.

He said that maintenance of machinery and vehicles used in sanitation works was being concentrated and all vehicles will be made in proper condition to bring them on the roads so that shortage of resources will not be hurdle in cleanliness works in any part of the city. He directed Municipal Services Department to provide DMCs with technical help and machinery and carry out lifting of garbage and shifting it to the landfill sites on preferential basis.

Administrator Karachi during his visit directed relevant officers on various locations and said that citizens were looking at us for better cleanliness condition in the city and it was necessary to work as a team to fulfil their expectations. We all should perform our responsibilities so that citizens would get its benefits and feel that their civic organization was in an effort to resolve their problems. He said that we would have to utilize available resources and prevent our children from non-healthy environment.

He appealed to citizens to cooperate with KMC and DMC staff in sanitation works and put every type of garbage only on allocated dumping sites. He said cleanliness works would succeed when positive and clear change would be seen in the city therefore cleanliness staff should make efforts to clean the city as soon as possible.
